It is important to use the right setup for your vehicle. ![]() ![]() Don’t copy someones dual battery setup without looking into if it will work for you. Some run fridges, some run lots of lights, and others have TVs. Keep in mind that everyone has a different setup for their fj. You need to consider why you are wanting a dual battery setup in the first place! If your doing it because your cousin said it will give you more power to run lights, he is wrong! If your doing it to get more battery reserve, why not consider running a single massive battery and avoid hundreds of dollars and hours of your time wiring up a second battery for a minimal gain in reserve capacity at a expense of a complicated charging system? Most dual battery systems wont gain anything over a oddessey 2150 battery (or similar) for reserve capacity that costs 300 to 400$ yet you have to buy 2 batteries, all the wiring, and spend the time wiring it up! Also if your goal is to gain the ability to start a dead main battery, there are devices that you can wire to the main battery that will prevent a total discharge of the battery, thus giving you the same dual battery (when wired right) benefit without all the work! Many can do everything the solenoid isolator can, without any wiring to the interior. This is good if you run down the second battery a fair amount often. Even during charging many of these isolators still electrically isolate one battery from the other. When you wire batteries together (even more so with completely different batteries) they can steal power from one another, which can cause battery lifespan issues. Many don’t just do what the mechanical isolator does, they actually electrically stop the batteries from talking to each other (even during charging). This isolator is a “smarter” breed of isolator. IMPORTANT NOTE: Starter solenoids are not designed to handle loads for long periods of time! The coil that energizes to connect the contacts will not be able to sustain the power transfer for any length of time, so don’t use a starter solenoid for a battery isolator!Īlso!!! The self isolating solenoids that run off voltage are a bad idea for use with a winch or any other major power draw device because it will effectively cut off the second battery when under a electrical load!!!! Rust/moisture/and water are things that will cause premature failure. Due to age/overcurrent/wear and tear, they can fail. They are reliable but they function the same as starter solenoids. If you wire it to be switched controlled (and not self turned on or ignition control) so you have more control, you open yourself up to forgetting you left the switch on or off which could lead to either a dead battery (along with the primary one if you had a short) or a non charged battery. When the FJ is charging the voltage is above 13.4 volts, at that voltage the batteries will be interconnected (so that they both can get power from the alternator and charge). It has wired internally voltage control that will trigger the isolator to isolate when the voltage drops below a certain point. Way 2 that this style isolator can work is via voltage. Essentially both batteries will work as one bank. Meaning if the ignition is on, the relay will connect the two batteries together. Way 1 is by being wired to a ignition source.
